Now that we’re into the week of my own birth, I’m going to suspend the winner-picking for a little while. I’m going to spend the next three weeks on a brief journey through my own moving-picture-viewing career, to try to single out some of the moments that played the strongest role in shaping me as a lover of movies and television.

Today through Friday, November 12:

Forty TV programs that I lived in for a while, and that live on in me. Not so much my favorites, or the best – though many if not most of them I would rank that way.

Monday, November 15 through Friday, November 19:

Forty movies released during my lifetime that I felt most elated by upon viewing for the first time.

Monday, November 22 through Black Friday:

Forty live TV moments that still reside as vividly in my memory as if they were something that actually happened to me, which in a sense they were, which is the point.

So here are eight shows that belong in any account of my viewing life:

Arrested Development

Barney Miller

Battlestar Galactica

Cheers

Connections

The Dennis Miller Show

Dynasty

The Gong Show
