So here’s a guy, two of whose three roles in the pictures have been administering lie detector tests in Steven Soderbergh films. Here’s another guy, with the same name, whose job it is to peddle California wines to the Cubans. Hmmm.

Christopher Nolan, you are the big winner today. You are the first person to actually bum me out that my parenting duties routinely preclude me from going to the movies, and will do so for quite some time to come. I had been rejoicing in the utter absence of tempting cinematic offerings until Inception came along. Not only that: it’s playing right now at the goddamn Ziegfeld. Nolaaaaaannnn!

I’m a little surprised that the hometown of Today’s Winner actually retains this web address. It seems like they should have sold it by now to the kind of online service that would pay dearly for a name that catchily devoid of a fixed meaning. You could sell pet food, financial services, Mexican morphine derivatives, Asian mail-order brides, what have you.

I’m not afraid to chat up Jason Segel’s upcoming Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made. I really have high hopes for that thing. The only announced non-Muppet-manipulating actors in the cast as it sits on the IMDb today are Segel and Charles Grodin. To me, that’s a good sign that they’re keeping all the special guest stars top secret…for now.

It’s interesting to discover – yet quite logical once you learn it – that most of the living original Muppeteers (chiefly Frank Oz) no longer routinely perform in any capacity. Today’s Winner is the next-generation Miss Piggy, Animal, and Fozzie Bear. What a sweet gig for someone born in 1970, considering what a thoroughgoing part of our childhood the Muppets were.

Today’s choice is perhaps the biggest star on the list, but only in Greece. I’m honoring her for having a hit record there during the summer my wife and I were honeymooning there. I was oblivious to Greek pop music at the time, of course. But there it was, it was in the air, and that will always be one of the happiest three weeks of my life. So I feel I owe a debt to the country, in all of its scattershot mosaic details. It was really the best place we could have been, five Augusts ago. <>

I’m eager to read more of Today’s Winner’s work. This essay, published five years ago, deals with the present blog’s whole subject, turning forty. I was touched by a German writer’s internalization of the September 11th attacks as emblematic for Germans her age too. Americans (outside those who’ve spent time on the inside of a think tank) too seldom think of themselves as “Westerners”. But our allies sure think of themselves that way. Whether they are accurate to think so is another matter. I’m just pleased to be reminded of the way the week after the attacks, firefighters in every country stood at attention in tribute to our lost people. Solidarity sure has become underrated in this day and age.

Other cool things about Thea Dorn…her philosophy dissertation was on the subject of self-deception…she has hosted a writers’ interview program on German television…she was a visiting professor at Dartmouth this year…judging by the internet, she has a personal affinity for a variety of hair colors…she is an intellectual crime novelist (isn’t that the new hot kind of writer?)…her personal website is presently “closed due to extensive Content updating” (looking forward to it, and by the way, more Germans should insist on gratuitous English-language Noun Capitalization (Nomenkapitalizierung)).

Even now, it can’t be easy to make a documentary criticizing the Argentine government. I imagine people are reasonably happy not to have the government they had 30 years ago, or 10 years ago. Today’s Winner made a film detailing the shocks the Argentine economy suffered at the last millennium’s end. I’d like to know why he gave it the title El tren blanco.

I did not realize that in Brazil comedians, such as Today’s Winner, often go by just the one name, like the soccer players. He appeared on the show that is the subject of one of the more uproariously funny Wikipedia pages I have yet encountered.

Today’s Winner is honored more for the man he shares his name with than anything else. However, hey, without carpenters, every movie would look like Dogville. So let’s hear it for them.

Well, first of all, Today’s Winner has a really fun name to say. Say it. It’s not that hard once you say it a couple of times out loud.

As to his work, he may be the artiest filmmaker at work in the world today. His films are so arty, they cannot actually be watched: they can only be written about, or alluded to. He holds a degree in architecture, for Christ’s sake. That should tell you everything you need to know.

On the plus side, his movies have really funny titles, and he seems like a fairly unpretentious man himself.

No winner today. I have to run; time to take my daughter to her first movie, a free outdoor screening of Double Indemnity. Rapid-fire witty dialogue is going to be one of her specialties!
