I’m really pulling for Today’s Winner, even though it seems possible he’s come kind of Christian fundamentalist nut. The reason I’ve got my hopes high for him is twofold. One, he is making ready his very first film as a writer/director. That’s a green shoot for all of us forty and over; historically, plenty of filmmakers don’t hit their stride until the prime of life. Two, the movie he’s doing appears to be a straight-ahead biopic of the historical Saint Nicholas. Who was Turkish, in case you forgot.

Well, ethnically speaking, he was Greek, but he operated in the part of Greece that became, territorially, Turkey. Centuries after his death and canonization, his body was looted and stolen by Italian midshipmen. Still later, his bones were repatriated to, of all places, Ireland. So it should be an interesting movie, especially if the story takes its subject’s death as a starting point rather than an ending.
