With baseball season just around the corner, I salute the example of Today’s Winner. Too many pitchers take too much time out on the mound between pitches, shrugging off signs, polishing the pill, wringing out the resin bag: in a word, bellyitching. Not our man Jon Lieber. He just stepped in there and threw the ball. The running times of his starts were demonstrably shorter than those of his fellow armsmen. He was the anti-Steve Trachsel. His contribution to the game will be greatly missed, and too-little emulated. Enjoy your retirement, Mr. Lieber, and shotgun a beer on me.
