Is there a phrase in Spanish – or Catalan – that equals our “You can’t judge a book by its cover?”

Today’s Winner takes the prize, first and foremost, for being a hilariously versatile and prolific writer. Novels, poems, kids’ books, essays. Multiple blogs, too, of course. Including one on which, I might add, she has already this morning posted about turning forty herself. Like I said, hilariously prolific.

I’m particularly taken by the selection of her book covers that’s featured in the blog margin. They range in style from the ticky-tacky, to a few instances of sublime abstract awesomeness that recall the work of (the equally hilariously prolific) Chip Kidd. So, even though I probably won’t get around to reading any of her books any time soon, I applaud Care Santos for having already written so damn many of them.

Along the same lines, it’s too bad that the IMDb doesn’t require at least one up-to-date head shot of all its constituent persons. I would love to be able to scroll through the faces that correspond with all the names I’ve been listing, iPod style. Just to see all the ways forty years can scar or spare a person’s visage. Just to judge them by their covers.
