As I reflect on what I’ve accomplished here, in more than half a year of daily postings, I have to say: I’ve really been enjoying compiling this roster of my peers. I thought it would afford me the opportunity to convey some deeper thoughts than I’ve been able to, or at least give me a chance to tell more and funnier jokes. But I’ve learned that blogging is really for people who a) have more idle time on their hands than I do; b) have a more compulsive need to share their insights with the world than I have; and c) have a greater facility with computers and their zingy visual language than I presently possess.
So, I’m not saying, “I’m not enough of a dork to do this properly.” I’m just saying that the product you see before you falls a bit short of my highest expectations for it. I’m ultimately a dilettante, not as serious as I would need to be in order to be taken fully seriously.
Now, imagine for a moment I was a sound recordist for film and television. Say I wanted to submit a photograph of myself to the leading website in my field, so that visitors to the site would be able to see what I did for a living, and how serious I was about it. I would have to say that no photograph could better capture a non-dilettante’s passion for his chosen field than the one that accompanies the profile of Today’s Winner.
